Barnevelder

Barnevelders are medium heavy dual-purpose chickens laying a good number of eggs, but, also making a good table bird. They originated from the Dutch town of Barneveld and were introduced to Britain during the late 19th century. They are hardy birds and good foragers, thus making them good winter layers. Being a very docile breed they are great for young children and beginners alike. Due to their docile nature, there can be a problem with bullying when these birds are kept in a mixed flock .
The standard weight is 8 pounds for a cockerel, 7 pounds for a hen, and 5 pounds for a pullet They produce a lovely medium to dark brown egg, laying approximately 180 per year.
